The Making: Small batches, poured with patience
Every Ember & Wick candle starts at our Old Market workbench in Bristol. We melt pure soy wax in limited quantities, measure fragrance by weight, and pour at calibrated temperatures so every jar burns cleanly and smells true.
Why batch size dictates candle quality
When candles are mass-produced in large vats, heat distribution fluctuates and delicate fragrance compounds can easily scorch before reaching the jar. The result is uneven scent throw: strong at the surface, weak halfway down.
We keep our batches capped at 12 to 18 jars per pour. Working on this scale allows us to monitor wax temperature at every transition, ensure uniform fragrance dispersion, and inspect each wick by hand before the candle sets.
What began as a small project taking orders through Instagram DMs has grown into a focused Bristol workshop, guided by the same unhurried standards in every jar.
What goes into every Ember & Wick jar
We choose simple, natural, and durable materials designed for clean living spaces and repeated refills.
100% Plant-Based Soy Wax
We pour with pure soy wax derived from responsibly farmed soybeans. Unlike paraffin wax, it burns at a lower temperature, creating a slow, even melt pool that emits zero petroleum soot.
Calibrated Botanical Fragrances
Our fragrance formulations blend essential and fine fragrance oils. Every batch is weighed to single-gram precision to achieve a rich, natural aroma that never overpowers the room.
Lead-Free Cotton Wicks
Each wick is braided from pure unbleached cotton with paper filaments for structural stability. Sized specifically to jar diameters to eliminate tunneling and soot mushrooming.
Heavyweight Reusable Vessels
We choose thick amber glass and durable ceramic vessels that protect scent oils from UV degradation and withstand repeated washings and studio refills.
The 5 stages of our pouring process
From raw soy flakes to cured, packaged jars ready for your mantlepiece or gift wrap.
Gentle Controlled Melting
Soy wax flakes are warmed gently in our studio melters to exact liquid temperatures, avoiding heat spikes that can degrade natural wax qualities.
Temperature-Timed Scent Binding
Fragrance is introduced only when the liquid wax cools to a strict window. This timing prevents volatile top notes from evaporating into the studio air.
Hand-Wicking & Alignment
Cotton wicks are secured by hand to the exact center of each jar, then held taut with wooden centering bridges during the pour.
Slow Ambient Pouring
Poured in small batches of 12 to 18 jars at a steady rate. Pouring in small quantities ensures smooth, uniform cooling without sinkholes or frosting.
Two-Week Studio Curing
Before any candle leaves our workshop, it rests on open shelves for two weeks. This curing time allows the soy crystal matrix to bind firmly with the scent oils.
Understanding scent throw & burn memory
A well-formulated soy candle behaves differently from commercial wax. Here is how our scents unfold in the room.
Cold Throw (In the Jar)
The subtle, fresh fragrance released when you lift the lid at room temperature. It gives an immediate sense of the candle's botanical profile.
Hot Throw (When Lit)
As the wax pool gently liquefies, the balanced fragrance oils warm and disperse throughout your living space without harsh synthetic heaviness.
Even Burn Memory
Allowing the melt pool to reach all jar edges on the initial burn establishes the wax memory, ensuring the candle burns down cleanly to the base.
